GOLD COAST, Australia (9 Feb 2003) -- Queensland authorities will meet next week to discuss how to raise awareness of the dangers of swimming in Gold Coast canals and lake systems. The talks have been prompted by the deaths of two men attacked by sharks in Gold Coast canals in just over two months. In December last year, a 23-year-old man died in the canals at Burleigh Waters after a bull shark bit his leg. At the time experts warned that the probable culprit, a bull shark, was extremely aggressive and the canals were its natural habitat. Yesterday, in an almost identical incident an 84-year-old man was found dead, also with a severe shark bite to the leg, after he went swimming in Burleigh Lake. | | Qld Primary Industries Minister Henry Palasczcuk says he will discuss the need for a public awareness campaign with the Gold Coast mayor next week. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
